Experience the best of Vaduz

Vaduz lies on the east bank of the Rhine at the foot of a steep wooded slope, in a country only about twenty-five kilometres long. Above the town stands Vaduz Castle, the home of the princely family, whose rooms are closed to visitors but whose walls dominate every view. The neo-Gothic cathedral of St Florin and a pedestrian main street, the Städtle, form the town's compact centre.

The Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, a dark, boxlike building opened in 2000, shows modern and contemporary art, and the National Museum, in a medieval building, tells the story of the principality. A postal museum recalls the country's long tradition of stamps. Walking trails climb from the town through forest to the Alpine village of Triesenberg, and the ski resort of Malbun lies higher in the Rätikon mountains. Switzerland lies just across the river.

The prince's family owns vineyards at the edge of town, and Pinot Noir is grown on the slopes of the Rhine valley. Local dishes include Käsknöpfle, small cheese dumplings, and Riebel, a dish of toasted maize semolina. Winter fills the high slopes with snow, and summer is for the high paths.
