Ulaanbaatar lies at around 1,350 metres in a valley below Bogd Khan mountain, and is among the coldest capitals in the world. It grew from a movable monastery town, and Gandan Monastery, still a working Buddhist centre, holds a tall gilded statue of Avalokiteshvara. Sükhbaatar Square, the central plaza, is dominated by the Government Palace with a large seated statue of Chinggis Khan.
The Choijin Lama Temple, the Bogd Khan Palace Museum and the National Museum of Mongolia show the country's religious and imperial history, while Zaisan Hill carries a Soviet memorial above the valley. Outside the city, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park has granite outcrops and ger camps, the giant steel statue of Chinggis Khan on horseback stands about an hour east, and Hustai National Park is a reserve for Przewalski's horses.
Buuz, steamed dumplings of mutton, khuushuur, fried meat pancakes, and suutei tsai, salty milk tea, are the staples of Mongolian cooking, with airag, fermented mare's milk, drunk in summer. The Naadam festival in July brings wrestling, archery and horse racing. Winters are long and fiercely cold, with temperatures falling far below freezing, and the short summer is green and warm.
