Tortola is about 20 km long, steep and green, with a spine of hills running its length and bays on both the north and south coasts. Road Town, the capital, sits on a deep harbour on the south side, where yachts fill the marinas, and the island has long been a base for sailing among the surrounding cays and channels. Sage Mountain National Park protects the highest peak and a patch of remnant rainforest.
Cane Garden Bay on the north shore is a long crescent of calm water and sand with beach bars. Smuggler's Cove at the western end and Brewers Bay on the north coast are quieter beaches, and the Mount Healthy windmill is a stone ruin from the sugar era. Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island and Virgin Gorda, where granite boulders form the pools of The Baths, are all reached by ferry or boat.
Beach shacks and roadside stalls serve fresh fish, lobster, conch fritters, rotis and johnnycakes. The islands sit in the trade winds and are warm all year; the winter months are the driest, and also the main sailing season. A rum punch is the usual way to end a day on the water.
