Roatan lies off the north coast of Honduras, a long ridge of green hills only a few kilometres wide. Its north shore faces the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, so snorkelling and scuba diving are the main attractions. West Bay Beach has a long curve of soft sand and shallow clear water, and West End, a laid-back village of dive shops, is nearby.
Pirates once hid in its sheltered bays, and English-speaking islanders, Garifuna communities such as Punta Gorda, and Spanish-speaking mainlanders now make up a mix of cultures. Coxen Hole is the main town. Boats cross to small cays, mangrove channels are paddled by kayak, and Utila and Guanaja, the other Bay Islands, lie across the water.
Island meals favour baleadas, flour tortillas folded around beans and cheese, fried or grilled fish, conch soup and coconut-rich stews. The dry months, February to May, are best for diving and sunshine, while October to January brings more rain and rougher seas. Hurricane season runs June to November.
