Riga was founded in 1201 and grew rich as a Hanseatic trading port on the Daugava River. Its old town, listed by UNESCO, has cobbled lanes around the Dome Cathedral, with a famous organ, and the spire of St Peter's Church, which has a viewing platform. The House of the Blackheads, a gabled merchants' guild hall, and the Three Brothers, among the oldest houses in the city, stand in the heart of the old town.
Streets around Alberta iela are crowded with Art Nouveau façades, many by the architect Mikhail Eisenstein, with masks, sphinxes and sculpted figures. The Central Market is housed in five former Zeppelin hangars. Mežaparks and the Daugava embankment offer greenery. Jūrmala, a resort strip of wooden villas and a long sandy beach, lies about half an hour west by train, and Sigulda's castles and the Gauja valley are an hour to the north-east.
Dark rye bread, smoked fish, and grey peas with bacon are Latvian staples, and pīrāgi are small bacon-filled buns. Black Balsam, a herbal liqueur, is made in Riga and goes into coffee and cocktails. Midsummer, on 23 and 24 June, is celebrated with wreaths of oak leaves and bonfires.
