Experience the best of Prague

Prague's skyline of spires rises over the Vltava, with a hilltop castle, statue-lined bridge and a medieval old town that survived largely intact.

Prague Castle, one of the largest castle complexes anywhere, crowns the hill of Hradčany, with St Vitus Cathedral at its centre and the tiny houses of Golden Lane tucked behind. Below, the Lesser Town's Baroque palaces and terraced gardens lead down to the Charles Bridge, lined with statues of saints and busy from dawn.

Across the river, Old Town Square gathers the twin-towered Týn Church and the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall, whose moving apostles always draw a crowd. Josefov, the old Jewish quarter, keeps its synagogues and crowded cemetery, and Wenceslas Square runs through the New Town. Petřín Hill and the clifftop fortress of Vyšehrad offer green escapes and long views over the red roofs.

Czech cooking is hearty: roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, goulash, beef in creamy svíčková sauce, and sweet trdelník pastry from street stalls. Beer culture runs deep, from historic halls to neighbourhood pubs. Blossom in spring and golden trees in early autumn make lovely seasons, summer is warm and busy, and December fills the squares with Christmas markets.
