Experience the best of Port Moresby

Port Moresby is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea, set on the south-east coast on a harbour of the Gulf of Papua, among dry brown hills. The Parliament House, with a design based on a traditional spirit house of the Sepik, and the National Museum and Art Gallery, which holds masks, carvings and war relics, are two key sights. Hanuabada, a Motu village of houses on stilts, stands beside the harbour.

Port Moresby Nature Park shows birds of paradise, tree kangaroos and cassowaries, and Varirata National Park, in the hills about an hour from town, has walks and lookouts over the coastal plain. The Bomana War Cemetery holds the graves of thousands of Allied servicemen. The Kokoda Track starts in the hills east of the city and crosses the Owen Stanley Range.

Markets such as Koki sell fresh fish, sweet potato, bananas and coconuts, and the traditional earth-oven feast called mumu is the dish of celebrations. The city has a drier climate than much of the country. The dry months from May to October are clearer, and a sea breeze cools the evenings along the waterfront.
