Experience the best of Monte-Carlo
Monte-Carlo is the hillside quarter of Monaco on the French Riviera, home to its Belle Époque casino, luxury hotels and Grand Prix streets.

Monte-Carlo climbs a steep hillside above the harbour in the Principality of Monaco, named in 1866 after Prince Charles III. At its heart stands the Casino de Monte-Carlo, a Belle Époque building designed by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opéra, facing gardens and the Café de Paris. Luxury hotels and boutiques surround the square, the opera house is part of the casino building, and the road past the casino forms part of the Grand Prix circuit.
Beyond the quarter, Larvotto beach and the Japanese Garden lie on the eastern shore, and Port Hercule, with its yachts, lies below. Monaco-Ville, the old town on the Rock, holds the Prince's Palace, a cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum, while Fontvieille sits on reclaimed land with a rose garden. The medieval village of Èze, the lemon town of Menton and the old harbour of Villefranche are all along the coast road, and Nice is about twenty kilometres west.
Monaco's own cooking includes barbajuan, fried pastries filled with Swiss chard and ricotta, and the dishes of the Riviera coast: socca, pissaladière, stuffed vegetables and fresh fish. Bakeries sell fougasse, a sweet bread scented with orange flower. Winters are mild, the Monte-Carlo Rally comes in January, and the Grand Prix fills the hillside in late spring.
