Maputo sits on a bay of the Indian Ocean in the far south of Mozambique, and until 1976 it was called Lourenço Marques. Its grid of wide avenues is lined with jacaranda and acacia trees and with colonial buildings of the early twentieth century, among them the domed railway station and the City Hall. The old Fortress, a stone fort begun in the eighteenth century, stands near the port, and the Central Market is a large hall of fruit, fish and spices.
Artists exhibit at the Núcleo de Arte, a cooperative in a colonial villa. Across the bay by ferry, the village of Catembe has a view back to the skyline, and Inhaca Island, with its coral reefs, is a short boat ride away. Further south, the Maputo Special Reserve, home to elephants, and Ponta do Ouro, a coast of dive sites near the South African border, lie within a day's drive.
Prawns are the city's pride, grilled with garlic and piri-piri, and the fish market sells fresh catch to be cooked on the spot. Matapa, cassava leaves cooked with peanuts and coconut milk, is a classic, along with xima, a maize porridge. Summers from November to March are hot and wet, and the dry winters are mild.
