Manama sits on the north-eastern coast of Bahrain's main island, where the old gate of Bab Al Bahrain opens into the souq's narrow lanes of spices, gold, fabric and household goods. The Bahrain National Museum on the waterfront follows the island's story from the Dilmun civilisation to the pearl trade, and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, with its large white dome, is one of the biggest in the Gulf.
Just outside the city on the north coast, the fort of Qal'at al-Bahrain stands on a mound built up from layers of ancient settlement, and it is a World Heritage Site. Muharraq, the old pearling town on its own island, keeps merchants' houses along the Pearling Path. In the desert south of Manama, the Tree of Life, a lone mesquite, grows far from any other greenery.
A Bahraini meal might be machboos, spiced rice with chicken, lamb or fish, followed by halwa and cardamom coffee. Hamour, a local grouper, is grilled over charcoal. Summer brings intense heat and humidity, so life moves outdoors in the mild months from November to March, when the waterfront promenades and café terraces come into their own.
