Experience the best of Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is a small royal town in northern Laos on the Mekong, with gilded temples, French colonial houses, morning alms-giving and nearby waterfalls.

Luang Prabang sits on a peninsula where the Nam Khan river joins the Mekong, ringed by green mountains. It was the royal capital of the Lao kingdom until 1975, and its whole old centre is a World Heritage site, a mix of Lao temples and French colonial shophouses. Wat Xieng Thong, built in the 16th century, has sweeping roofs and glass mosaics, and the former Royal Palace now serves as the national museum.

A flight of steps leads up Mount Phousi for views of the river at sunset. Each morning monks in saffron robes walk through the streets collecting offerings of rice, a tradition kept for centuries. Kuang Si Falls, a series of turquoise pools in the forest, lie about thirty kilometres south, and the Pak Ou Caves, filled with thousands of Buddha images, are a boat ride up the Mekong.

Lao food is built on sticky rice eaten by hand, with laap, a minced-meat salad with herbs and lime, grilled river fish, spicy jeow dips and the local sausage. Baguettes and strong coffee are a legacy of the French years. The cool dry months from November to February are the most comfortable, and the Lao New Year in mid-April brings water-throwing and processions.
