Livingstone stands on the northern bank of the Zambezi, about ten kilometres from Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders. The town grew after the railway arrived in 1905 and was capital of Northern Rhodesia until 1935. It is named after David Livingstone, who in 1855 became the first European to see the falls, and the Livingstone Museum holds his letters and local history.
The falls spread across more than a kilometre of the Zambezi, and the Knife Edge Bridge gives a view of the water crashing into the gorge. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, beside the river, shelters giraffe, zebra and antelope, and the river above the falls has hippos and crocodiles. The Victoria Falls Bridge, built in 1905, crosses to Zimbabwe, and Botswana's Chobe National Park, known for its elephants, is about an hour away.
Nshima, a thick maize porridge, is eaten with relishes such as kapenta, small dried fish, or grilled bream from the river and beef stew. Fresh fruit and groundnuts are sold at the town's markets. The Zambezi is in flood around April, when the spray rises high above the gorge, and thins out by late in the year, when the hot dry weather before the rains lowers the water.
