Experience the best of Kigali
Kigali is Rwanda's capital, a tidy city on green hills in the middle of the country, with memorials, craft markets and routes to gorilla country.

Kigali spreads across several hills in the heart of Rwanda, at about 1,500 metres, so the air is mild all year. The Kigali Genocide Memorial tells the story of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and honours those buried there. The Kandt House Museum holds natural history displays in the house of the German colonial resident Richard Kandt, and the Inema Arts Centre shows contemporary Rwandan art.
Kimironko market is a colourful stretch of fabric and fruit stalls, and Nyamirambo is a lively neighbourhood of mosques, tailors and small cafés. On the city's edge, Mount Kigali has forest walks. Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas, lies about two to three hours north-west, Lake Kivu's shore a few hours west, and Akagera National Park, with savannah wildlife, two hours east.
Rwandan meals are simple and filling: beans, plantain, cassava leaves, potatoes and grilled meat skewers called brochettes. Rwanda is known for its coffee and tea, grown on the surrounding hills. Rain comes in two wet seasons, March to May and October to November; the drier months from June to September and December to February are best for travel. On the last Saturday of each month, residents join umuganda, a national day of community work.
