Kampong Jerudong lies on the north coast of Borneo in Brunei Darussalam, west of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, along the South China Sea. Brunei is a small sultanate, mostly rainforest, made up of two separate parts, and Jerudong lies in the western part, facing the sea. The word kampong means village in Malay.
The capital's sights lie a short drive east: the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, with its golden dome and a lagoon, and Kampong Ayer, a large water village of houses on stilts. Brunei's coast has long sandy beaches, among them Muara and Jerudong, and the rainforest of Ulu Temburong National Park in the eastern part of the country is reached by boat.
Ambuyat, a sticky starch from the sago palm, is eaten by twirling it round bamboo forks and dipping it in sour sauces, and nasi katok is a simple rice meal. Heat and humidity stay constant through the year, rain falls in every month, and the heaviest showers come from November to January.
