Kampala is built on a scattering of hills in southern Uganda, a short distance north of Lake Victoria. The Kasubi Tombs, the burial ground of the Buganda kings, are a World Heritage Site. The Uganda Museum is one of the oldest in East Africa and holds musical instruments and crafts. The hilltop Namirembe and Rubaga cathedrals, and the National Mosque on Old Kampala Hill with its minaret, each give views over the city.
Owino and Nakasero markets sell fruit, fabrics and crafts, and the Baha'i Temple on Kikaya Hill is a domed building with green gardens. In the evenings, boda-boda motorbike taxis weave through the traffic. Jinja, at the source of the Nile and a rafting centre, is about two hours east, Entebbe's botanical gardens and wildlife centre lie to the south-west, and Mabamba Swamp, home to the shoebill stork, is a half-day trip.
Ugandan meals are built around matoke, steamed green bananas, with groundnut sauce, beans, grilled tilapia and goat. The street snack called a Rolex wraps an omelette and vegetables in a chapati. Fresh passion fruit and pineapples are everywhere. Close to the equator but high, Kampala is warm and pleasant all year, with rain in March to May and September to November.
