Experience the best of Bratislava
Bratislava is Slovakia's capital on the Danube, a small city of a hilltop castle, a pedestrian old town, quirky statues and vineyards close by.

Bratislava lies on both banks of the Danube close to the Austrian and Hungarian borders, about an hour from Vienna. Its castle, a white four-towered building on a ridge, looks over the river and the old town below. The pedestrian old town has pastel baroque palaces, the Michael's Gate tower, and St Martin's Cathedral, where Hungarian kings were crowned from the 16th to the 19th century, when Pozsony, as it was then known, was the Hungarian capital.
The SNP Bridge, with a flying-saucer-shaped restaurant above the river, is one of the city's landmarks, and the Blue Church is a small, sugary Art Nouveau chapel. Statues around the old town, such as the Čumil, a bronze worker peering out of a manhole, are a local joke. Devín Castle's ruins stand at the meeting of the Danube and Morava, and the Little Carpathians, whose slopes carry vineyards and wine cellars, rise to the north.
Bryndzové halušky, small potato dumplings with sheep's cheese and bacon, are the national dish, and kapustnica, a cabbage soup, is eaten at Christmas. Bratislavské rožky, crescent rolls filled with walnuts or poppy seed, are the city's bakery speciality. The wine harvest brings festivals in autumn, and a Christmas market fills the main square.
