Experience the best of Accra
Accra, Ghana's capital on the Gulf of Guinea, mixes colonial forts, independence monuments, busy markets, beach bars and a famed music scene.

Accra lines the Atlantic coast, and its older districts keep the character of a trading port. In Jamestown, an old fishing quarter, a lighthouse stands beside Dutch and British forts, and boxing gyms spill onto the lanes. Black Star Square, with its Independence Arch, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park honour Ghana's first president and independence in 1957, while the W. E. B. Du Bois Centre remembers the writer who spent his final years here.
Makola Market sprawls with fabric, spices and household goods, and the Arts Centre sells carvings, beads and kente cloth. Labadi and Kokrobite beaches lie along the coast. North of the city, the cool Akuapem hills hold the Aburi Botanical Gardens, and farther west the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina, built by European traders and later central to the trade in enslaved people, are among West Africa's most important historic sites.
Ghanaian food is built on stews and starches: jollof rice, waakye with beans, kenkey with fried fish and hot pepper sauce, banku with grilled tilapia, and spiced fried plantain. Highlife and Afrobeats pour out of bars after dark. Accra is hot all year, with the main rains in April to June; the drier months from November to March are most comfortable, though the dusty harmattan blows in December and January.
