Venetië drijft in een lagune met ruim honderd eilanden: een autovrije stad van kanalen, paleizen en bruggen waar elke wandeling onverwacht eindigt.

Het Canal Grande slingert als een grote omgekeerde S door de stad, omzoomd door paleizen en overspannen door de Rialtobrug. Bij de monding verzamelt de Piazza San Marco de Sint-Marcusbasiliek met haar gouden mozaïeken, het Dogenpaleis, de Brug der Zuchten en de hoge bakstenen campanile.
