Route

  1. This tour will give you an excellent way of familiarizing yourself with Stone Town’s geography, history, architecture and culture. This fascinating excursion leads you through a maze of narrow streets that boasts more than 2000 limestone buildings, covering an area of 50 hectares and with a population of 18000 living in the suburbs. With its defined and overlapping African, Arab, Indian, Persian and European elements, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Zanzibar and Stone Town are truly cosmopolitan. After a visit to the Anglican Cathedral (former slave market), House of Wonders (national museum), Palace museum, the Old Fort, Darajani market, Hamamni Baths, Catholic Cathedral, Freddy Mercury house and experiencing the hustle and bustle of the streets, the bazaar full of coffee drinkers and the beautiful doors of Zanzibar, you too will bear witness that Stone Town is a cultural crossroads and that it is worthy of its world heritage title. Also take the time to explore the markets where local people purchase their daily requirements and also a market street full of colourful textiles. Whether you are interested in history, culture, architecture, renovation work, or just a shopaholic, your guide can adapt your tour to your needs. They will share amusing, but also cruel stories, about the life and culture of the old times in Stone Town and then safely deposit you back where your tour started/ the place you were met.

  • 5A Remarkable Experience in Zanzibar

It's an experience I would highly recommend. My guide, Muhammed, delivered a highly personal tour. He answered all my questions and allowed me time to explore places that were interesting to me. There's no way I could have navigated Stone Town without him. In addition to being a great guide, he was also a supporter of local businesses. For example, we passed by a cafe that was newly established, but was definitely off the beaten path. When i asked how a business would survive in its location, he said he had watched the business from it's beginning; as long as it seemed to be a credible business, he would bring tourists by. He knew a lot of people along the tour and they greeted him warmly. When I asked for a referral for a barber shop, he took me to one. The barber did a great job. He explained what I should pay for skewers at the night market if I went and what would be a ripoff. He graciously answered my questions about Zanzibar and Tanznia beyond tourist interest (I made it clear that if he found any of my questions inappropriate, he was to let me know immediately). He explained Zanzibar's history as it related to the slave trade and gave context to the "Well, blacks sold other blacks into slavery!" argument made when certain groups take a defensive posture. Let me just say that context is EVERTHING. He pointed out the various mosques and churches that were next to each other and how there's true religious tolerance among the various faith groups. He explained how Friday was the holy day for Muslims, the clothes they wore and the call for prayer. I learned about the various groups who came through Zanzibar, for better or for worse, and the influences they left behind (architecture, food, customs, etc.), the need to be respectful when photographing people and so much more. If you are someone who travels with intention and want to truly know where you are, this is the tour for you. I can't recommend this tour, and Muhammed, enough.

About Zanzibar City

Zanzibar City is the main town of Zanzibar island, and its old Stone Town of carved doors and narrow lanes carries Swahili, Arab and Indian history.

Stone Town is the old heart of Zanzibar City, a maze of narrow lanes, coral-stone houses and carved wooden doors, shaped by centuries of Arab, Indian, Persian and European traders. The House of Wonders, the Old Fort and the Sultan's Palace face the seafront, and Forodhani Gardens fills with food stalls at dusk. The Anglican cathedral stands on the site of a former slave market, with a sobering memorial nearby.
