This stunning structure was built during the 18th Dynasty (c. 1479–1458 BCE) to honor Queen Hatshepsut, one of Egypt’s greatest female pharaohs.

3. Colossi of Memnon, Luxor The Colossi of Memnon are two massive statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that stand as silent sentinels on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor. These imposing monuments, carved from single blocks of quartzite sandstone, originally guarded the entrance to Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple, which was once the largest temple complex in ancient Egypt but has since been mostly lost to time.

About Luxor

Luxor ligt op de plek van het antieke Thebe, met reusachtige tempels op de oostoever en de koningsgraven van de Vallei der Koningen aan de overkant.

Op de oostoever strekt het tempelcomplex van Karnak zich uit over hectares aan pylonen, obelisken en het zuilenwoud van de Grote Hypostyle Zaal.
