About Richmond

Richmond is the capital of Virginia, a historic city on the James River with a Jefferson-designed Capitol, Civil War history and whitewater in town.

Richmond is the capital of Virginia, set at the falls of the James River where the coastal plain meets the Piedmont. Thomas Jefferson designed the State Capitol, which was modelled on a Roman temple in France and completed in the 1780s. St John's Church on Church Hill is where Patrick Henry made his speech of 1775 demanding liberty or death. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and its museums and battlefields tell that history.

Top-ranked sights in Richmond: Carytown, The Poe Museum, White House of the Confederacy.
