6. Villa Balbiano, located on the western shore of Lake Como, in the municipality of Ossuccio, is an enchanting historic residence dating back to the 18th century. The villa stands on a promontory that juts out into the lake, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. History: The villa was built in 1787 on a pre-existing Franciscan monastery by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, who had also obtained the nearby Villa del Balbiano from the Giovio family. Cardinal Durini passionately dedicated himself to the expansion and embellishment of the villa, creating an Italian garden with statues, fountains and tree-lined avenues. Over the centuries, the villa has had numerous owners, including Count Guido Monzino, explorer and mountaineer, who enriched it with works of art and memorabilia from his expeditions. Architecture: The villa has a neoclassical façade with an ashlar portal and two bell towers, a remnant of the ancient church of the Franciscan monastery.

About Lake Como

Lake Como is a deep, Y-shaped lake in Lombardy, ringed by steep green mountains, pastel villages, ornate villas and terraced gardens.

Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y, with three arms that meet near Bellagio. At more than 400 metres deep, it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, held between steep wooded slopes that rise towards the Alps. Villages with painted houses and small harbours stand along the water, and a network of ferries links them, making a boat the best way to see the shoreline.
