Embark on a journey through the Kumano Kodo’s historic Kii-ji route, visiting sacred sites such as Fujishiro Shrine, the ancestral Suzuki Mansion, and the spiritual Hai-no-tawa Pass, the "Ridge of Prayer." Accompanied by a professional guide well-versed in the lore of this UNESCO World Heritage site, you will have the privilege of exploring these historic paths at your own comfortable pace, ensuring a personalized and stress-free experience. By joining this tour, you gain immersive cultural insights and insider knowledge only a local expert can provide, from ritualistic origins to memorable encounters with local traditions. This excursion is perfectly suited for adventure seekers, history buffs looking to discover the roots of a famous Japanese name, and active families who wish to step off the beaten path and connect with Japan’s spiritual heart in a safe and rewarding environment.
One of the five most important shrines (Gotai-Oji) along the Kumano Kodo. For centuries, pilgrims have stopped here to pray for safety before tackling the steep mountain passes. You will also visit Suzuki Mansion (鈴木屋敷), the ancestral home of the "Suzuki" family. Suzuki is the most common surname in Japan and a world-famous brand name. You can explore the roots of this legendary family at their recently restored 12th-century residence. Then, you will crime Fujishiro-zaka Slope, a beautiful, moss-covered ancient stone path. Walking here feels like stepping back 1,000 years into Japan’s spiritual past. The highlight of the tour is Hai-no-tawa Pass. As the highest point in this section, it offers a dramatic view where the mountains meet the sea—a perfect spot to experience the "spiritual geography" of Japan. Stand where Emperors and pilgrims stood 1,000 years ago to offer prayers to the gods of Kumano. Experience the same breathtaking view that has inspired travelers for centuries.
The finish line of your hike. This area is world-renowned for Arida Mikan (Mandarin Oranges). In autumn and winter, the entire mountainside turns bright orange.

Wakayama is a castle city on the Kii Peninsula south of Osaka, a gateway to Mount Koya and the Kumano pilgrim roads, with mandarin and plum orchards.
Wakayama is the capital of Wakayama Prefecture, on the Kii Channel at the mouth of the Kino River, and was the seat of the Kishu branch of the Tokugawa family. Its castle, rebuilt in concrete after the Second World War, stands on a hill in the middle of town with a garden and views toward the sea. Kimiidera, a hillside temple above Wakaura Bay on the Saigoku pilgrimage, is reached by a long stone stairway.
