Itinerario
You will take the train to Kitakamakura Staion.
Kencho-ji is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan, founded in 1253 during the Kamakura shogunate. It serves as the head temple of the Kencho-ji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism and has played a central role in the development of Zen culture in Japan. Visitors can explore its impressive temple grounds, including the grand Sanmon gate, serene meditation halls, and beautifully landscaped gardens. Surrounded by forested hills, Kencho-ji also marks the starting point of the Tenen Hiking Course, offering a unique combination of spiritual heritage and scenic walking in Kamakura.
The Tenen Hiking Course is one of Kamakura’s most scenic forest trails, connecting historic temples through peaceful wooded hills. The route begins near Kencho-ji, Japan’s oldest Zen training monastery, and continues along gentle ridge paths with seasonal greenery and elevated views over the city. After approximately 6 km of light hiking, the trail leads to the tranquil hillside temple Zuisen-ji, known for its elegant rock garden. Taking about three hours including local transportation, this course offers a balanced experience of nature, history, and quiet exploration in Kamakura.
Zuisen-ji is a tranquil Zen temple located in the eastern hills of Kamakura. Founded in 1327, it is known for its beautiful rock garden carved directly into the natural hillside—an early and rare example of landscape design integrated with nature. Often called the “Temple of Flowers,” Zuisen-ji is especially charming in plum blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Tucked away from the busy center of Kamakura, it offers a peaceful atmosphere and a perfect place to rest after completing the Tenen Hiking Course.

About Tokyo
Top-ranked sights in Tokyo: Senso-ji Temple (Asakusa Temple), Tokyo Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu).
