In evidenza
After 20 years of photographing and observing the behavioural patterns of the Southern Right Whales that visit Walker Bay annually, I consider myself a Whale behavioural specialist and I offer a unique and interactive land based whale watching experience, that includes sharing knowledge and personal stories spanning over two decades. During my time photographing these spectacular mammals, it became a dream of mine to publish a photographic coffee table book. I'm pleased to say the 2nd edition, Hermanus Whales, the Journey Continues, is available directly from me and selected outlets in Hermanus. I look forward to meeting you & sharing my knowledge & passion about the SRW's & the town I live in.

Itinerario
Introduction to Southern Right Whales and Hermanus The visit to the museum is to familiarise clients with the Southern Right whale, info on their size, length and weight. I tell them the connection/ synergy there is between whales and Hermanus. I speak about the whaling days and what impact it had on them and how it almost led to their demise. The tour then follows the beautiful cliff path in front of town at an elevation of about 15 metres above the ocean. This elevation lends itself to having a great vantage looking out over the bay. What people don’t realise is the depth of the ocean immediately down from the cliffs is about 10 metres. This allows the whales to approach the rocks of the cliffs to pretty much touching distance. Whales are often seen between 50 and 300 metres from the shore line.
Enjoy a 2 hour walk along the cliff path with myself. I know all the secret whale sighting locations. I know each whale intimately. I will explain all the relevant information from the whales age, behaviors and best possible timing of a breach for the best photo oppertunity.

5Fabulous land based whale experience.
So glad that we chose a land based whale watching experience with Dave de Beer. His extensive knowledge and passion for all things whales was immediately evident when he began the trip with a talk about whales in the Hermanus whale museum. Following that talk we knew so much more about the subject, and Dave drove us to various locations where we might be able to see the whales, and indeed we did see lots of whales but not in Hermanus. Dave kindly drove quite far along the coast to different locations where we were able to observe these amazing creatures. It was a pleasure to spend the whole morning with Dave and then briefly in his a d Nikki's shop looking at amazing photos ta ken by Dave. Would highly recommend Dave de Beer land based whale watching.
5You need to meet Dave de Beer!
Dave picked us up from our hotel and we embarked on a fabulous trip of discovery about whales and particularly the Southern Right Whale. I don’t think there is anything Dave doesn’t know about them! We were on land with our binoculars and Dave pointed out loads of whales in Walker Bay in Hermanus. We told Dave our pre-arranged whale watching boat trip from Gansbaai had been cancelled a couple of days earlier due to bad weather. A phone call later we were booked on the noon boat trip that day with Southern Boat Charters and that was also the most amazing experience. Can’t recommend Dave or Southern Boats highly enough. Just do it as a once in a lifetime experience m!
5Whale watching in hermanus
The booking process was really easy and the tour was extremely fun, well pitched, engaging for us and our two kids aged 14 and 17. We chose land based as we have sea sickness in our party and were able to enjoy a variety of view points and understand more about the whales that travel in and out of hermanus. It was a great way to experience the whales of the area and we are deeply grateful for Dave’s open hearted nature and wisdom. He’s also a very talented photographer ! The restaurant next to his shop was also excellent for food after!
5Beyond amazing!
This is a long overdue review. Our tour with Dave was beyond amazing. It was the highlight of our trip to Hermanus. He is just so passionate and shares all his knowledge. He went above and beyond and drove for a long time to show us the whales. I could not recommend him more. My family and I were delighted to meet him, an absolute privilege.
4Whale walking tour
Obviously knowledgeable and enthusiastic about whales. Unfortunately did not see a single whale on this afternoon trip though had seen a mother and calf in the same area in the morning. That’s nature.
5FANTASTIC!!
Absolutely amazing experience! Dave is so passionate, knowledgable and friendly, and having a private tour like this makes all the difference. He took us to multiple locations and shared intimate knowledge of the whales and local area. We highly highly recommend!

About Hermanus
Hermanus is a seaside town on Walker Bay in South Africa's Western Cape, one of the world's best places to watch southern right whales from the shore.
Hermanus is a coastal town on Walker Bay, about a hundred and twenty kilometres by road south-east of Cape Town, on a curving shore backed by mountains. It began as a fishing village in the nineteenth century, and its old harbour is now a museum. A clifftop path of about twelve kilometres follows the shoreline, and from it southern right whales can be seen close inshore, with a Whale Crier blowing a kelp horn to announce them.
Top-ranked sights in Hermanus: Benguela Cove, Hermanus Cliff Path, Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
