  1. According to documents from the mid-16th century, Machu Picchu would have been one of the rest residences of Pachacútec, ninth Inca of the Tahuantinsuyo between 1438 and 1470. However, some of its best constructions and the obvious ceremonial character of the main access road to The llaqta give an account of its previous origin to Pachacutec and its presumable use as a religious sanctuary.

About Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley is the Urubamba River valley in the Peruvian Andes, a fertile corridor of Inca terraces, fortress towns and markets near Cusco.

The Sacred Valley follows the Urubamba River, also called the Vilcanota, through the Andes north-west of Cusco. It lies lower than the city, so the air is warmer and the land greener. The Incas farmed the valley intensively, and stone-walled terraces still climb its hillsides. Villages such as Pisac, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo lie along the river, with snow peaks above.

Top-ranked sights in Sacred Valley: Inca Trail, Lares Trek.
