• 5Great activity to spend a few hours and

  The staff were very kind and great to speak to. My partner and I both speak Japanese very fluently so that definitely helped, but the staff also can speak and understand English very well too! Very relaxing time, and a great experience. Nothing too complicated, but for the price it was excellent, and the shop also has some beautiful products to purchase. As for designs to choose from, they have a decent selection themed across the 4 seasons. To finish you also get a nice photo to bring back to capture the moment. You get what you pay for and a little more!

• 2Missed opportunity

  Though wanted to go. I arrived in Japan May 28th, I did schedule for June 6th , however, somehow computer glitch occurred and confirmed for May 6th which was a month prior to arriving in Japan. Sadly, missed entire lantern bamboo making class in Beppu. Headed to Beppu shortly and currently in Nakasu, Fukuoka. Sad.

• 5Great experience!

  We wanted to try something different and unique. The Bamboo Lantern Workshop did not disappoint. Three females accompanied me. They were worried that they would not enjoy this activity since they had never used a drill before. Our instructor Kei was very friendly and assured them that they would be fine. She provided helpful hints and encouragement throughout. The girls started laughing and having a blast after starting on their lanterns. In the end their lanterns turned out nicer than mine! We all agreed that it was a fun experience and would recommend this activity to everyone.

• 5A fun to do craft learning experience

  It was a lot of fun and the learning experience was great. Kei-san was a great instructor and English speaking. She and the entire staff at Space Beppu are exceptional!

• 5Bamboo workshop, souvenirs, art

  I had a very good time at the Space Beppu. The Workshop ist fun and the bamboo lanterns look so beautiful! Furthermore the staff ist very friendly and helpful. They know a lot about Beppu and its history and they are more than happy to answer your questions. You can buy souvenirs and art from lokal artists.

• 5Amazing staff, cute shop and super fun experience for all!

  Our 12 year old son saw this activity and asked if we could do it while on a long weekend in Beppu. This was such a fun experience to do as a family but I’m sure I would’ve had fun either way. Lol! It is such a clever use of bamboo and a great souvenir to take home. Our guide was Nu from Myanmar and she was so sweet and patient. Our son was able to do the whole activity without help. I would 100% recommend this activity. The shop also sells locally made items and art, has a book cafe and makes coffee. Overall 10/10 experience and I would happily do it again!

About Beppu

Beppu is a hot-spring city on Kyushu's east coast, with steaming spring pools called hells, sand baths and mountains rising behind the bay.

Beppu, in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, sits between mountains and the sea, and plumes of steam rise from vents across the town. It has more hot-spring sources and a greater flow of hot water than any other place in Japan. The Hells of Beppu, a group of showpiece springs, include the blue Sea Hell, the blood-red Chinoike pond and bubbling mud pools, to be viewed rather than bathed in.
