About Gonder
Gondar, in northern Ethiopia, was the capital of the empire for over two centuries, and its royal castles still stand in the middle of town.
Gondar lies at about 2,100 metres in the Amhara highlands of northern Ethiopia, north of Lake Tana. Emperor Fasilides made it his capital in 1636, and over the next two centuries rulers added palaces, a library and banqueting halls to the Royal Enclosure, Fasil Ghebbi, a walled compound of stone castles listed by UNESCO. Its towers and battlements have led some to call the town the Camelot of Africa.
