Itinerary

  1. The Puma Trail at Mombacho Volcano is a challenging 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) hike that takes approximately four hours to complete. This trail leads adventurers through the volcano's lush cloud forest, offering the opportunity to observe diverse flora and fauna, including exotic orchids, endemic birds, and, with luck, the elusive puma. The path traverses ancient lava flows and craters, providing insight into the geological forces that shaped the region. Along the way, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Nicaragua, Granada, Ometepe Island, Masaya Volcano, and Apoyo Lagoon, especially on clear days. Due to its difficulty, the Puma Trail requires a guide and is recommended for experienced hikers seeking an immersive nature experience.

  3. The Kayak Tour on the Islets of Granada is a peaceful and scenic way to explore one of Nicaragua’s most unique natural formations. Located on Lake Nicaragua, the islets are a group of over 360 small volcanic islands formed by an ancient eruption of Mombacho Volcano. This relaxing adventure allows you to paddle through narrow channels surrounded by lush vegetation, spot exotic birds, monkeys, and other wildlife, and get a closer look at the local island communities. Along the way, you'll enjoy stunning views of the lake and volcano, all while gliding across calm waters. Ideal for all skill levels, this kayak tour offers a perfect mix of nature, culture, and gentle activity, great for those looking to connect with the peaceful side of Nicaragua.

About Granada

Granada is a colonial city on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, with pastel streets, a yellow cathedral, and a volcano and crater lake close by.

Granada was founded in 1524 beside Lake Nicaragua, and is one of the oldest colonial cities on the American mainland. Its streets of pastel single-storey houses with wooden doors and inner courtyards lead to Parque Central, where horse-drawn carriages wait beside the yellow cathedral. The bell tower of La Merced church gives a view over the tiled roofs to the lake and Mombacho volcano.

Top-ranked sights in Granada: Apoyo Lagoon Natural Reserve (Laguna de Apoyo), Granada Cathedral, Iglesia de la Merced.
