5Magical day in a precious corner of Europe
This was an unforgettable experience. We walked for four hours with our guide Joanna through the primeval forest of eastern Poland, bordering Belarus. The autumn colours were superb, the variety of fungi on offer the explanation about this 12,000 year old forest made for a fantastic day. Sturdy walking shoes are essential. Check weather forecast and dress appropriately
5Roy is the REAL DEAL!!
Wow!!! We cannot recommend Roy and his team highly enough! Five stars just don’t seem enough! Roy was our guide and from beginning to end made us feel like long lost friends. Roy’s wealth of knowledge, but more importantly, his passion about nature and the animals of Costa Rica were evident all morning! We started the hike seeing a family of Coatimundi (coatis) as they foraged for food in the trees high above. We learned about all kinds of flowers, even saw one that smelled like blood to attract mosquitoes. Short time later we heard this loud howling that Roy explained was a Howler Monkey and boy did it sound angry! We got to a point on the trail where the howling was loudest, Roy expertly set up his scope, and in less than a minute we were viewing a huge male howler monkey with his baby. Roy’s excitement in sharing this experience with us was beautiful to see. At the end of the Essence trial there is a beautiful waterfall. On the hike back we heard some white face monkeys, got a quick glimpse of them jumping through the trees, but were unable to get pics. And lastly we were surprised to get to see a Resplendent Quetzal! While Roy has no control over what animals make an appearance, his knowledge and expertise, allows him to make trail decisions that provide the best opportunities! We are so grateful we chose to join Roy on this amazing hike! If you’re in the Monteverde area, we highly recommend Roy and his team! Mark & Joanna
5Incredible knowledgeable and passionate guide
Roy was an incredible guide. He is so passionate about the flora and fauna around monteverde. I feel like I learned so much about every plant, animal and insect we saw. He also was able to spot animals/birds and identify them instantly. He brought extra binoculars making it way easier to spot the wildlife. He was kind enough to screenshot all of the birds that we saw and send them to me after the tour. My family and I had such an amazing experience that we ended up having Roy guide us through Curicancha the next day. Couldn’t recommend a tour with Roy more!
5Cloud Forest in September
It was a very nice experience! We expected to end up in a group but due to low season we had a private tour and the guide really took time to show us everything. Would definitely recommend!
5Great Experience With Knowledgeable Guide
Our guided tour with Roy was an excellent experience. Roy is very knowledgeable and explained a lot of things along with trail. We were hoping to see more wildlife, but that’s out of the control of Roy. We saw a small frog and a milk snake right at the beginning and then a lot of birds along the way. I would recommend this tour to others, but don’t expect to see much wildlife. We went in September.
3There are better places to go
If you are staying in Monteverde, this would be okay to go to for the purpose of a hike. But if staying in San Jose, this is a complete waste of time and money. This is only a rainforest trail. Nothing else. Once you have walked on the Monteverde Cloud Forest trails for five minutes, you have seen it all. We saw three monkeys and no other animals. We did not see any birds at Monteverde Cloud Forest. However, across the street, there is a little gift shop and they have a collection of hummingbird feeders and you will see so many beautiful hummingbirds up close. That was the best part of the trip to Monteverde.

About Monteverde
Monteverde is a mountain community in Costa Rica's cloud forest, known for misty reserves, hanging bridges, birdlife and coffee farms.
Monteverde is a scattering of farms and small villages on the Tilarán Mountains, around 1,400 metres up, where moist winds from the Caribbean wrap the ridge in cloud. Quaker families from the United States settled here in the 1950s and began dairy farming, and they helped protect the forest above. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve and the neighbouring Santa Elena Reserve preserve mossy trees, ferns, orchids and hanging vines.
Top-ranked sights in Monteverde: Curi-Cancha Reserve, Selvatura Park, Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve (Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena).
