Gangasagar is an island situated just off the coast of the East Indian state of West Bengal, where the River Ganges meets the Bay of Bengal. The island offers miles of silvery sand beaches away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is also a pilgrimage site for Hindus who take a dip in the Ganges to cleanse their sins. To reach the island, you have to drive around 60 miles out of Kolkata to board a ferry to the island. Highlights • River Ganges and the Bay of Bengal • Gangasagar beach • Temple of Kapil Muni
You will be picked up from your hotel in Kolkata for the 3-hour drive to the city of Kakdwip that is situated on the banks of the River Hooghly. Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and the former capital of British India, a river city of colonial buildings, bookshops, sweets and Durga Puja.
Kolkata grew from three villages on the Hooghly River and was the capital of British India until 1911. Colonial landmarks include the Victoria Memorial, a white marble hall set in gardens, St Paul's Cathedral, and the Indian Museum, founded in 1814. The Howrah Bridge, a steel cantilever bridge over the Hooghly, carries enormous crowds, and hand-pulled rickshaws and trams still run in the streets.
Top-ranked sights in Kolkata: Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, Victoria Memorial Hall, Howrah Bridge.
