In the year 1000, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland and proceeded with throwing his statues of gods into the waterfall. The water falls from a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters.

About Akureyri

Akureyri, at the head of a long fjord in North Iceland, is a small northern town with a hillside church, a botanical garden and big mountain views.

Akureyri lies at the head of Eyjafjörður, one of the longest fjords in Iceland, with snowy mountains rising on both sides. It is the largest town in the north and is often called the capital of North Iceland. The Akureyri Church, a stark concrete building designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, stands on a hill above the centre at the top of a broad flight of steps, and the botanical garden is one of the most northerly in the world.
