  2. The National Park covers a total area of 300 square kilometers, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometers. There’s also quite an altitude difference – the highest point is at 1,280m, the lowest at 380m – although the total height difference between the lakes themselves is only 135m. (Veliki Slap, the largest waterfall, is 70m tall.) The lake system is comprised of 16 named and several smaller unnamed lakes, cascading one into the next. Due to the geological substrate and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system has been divided into the Upper and Lower lakes. The Lower Lakes, consisting of the lakes Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod, were formed in permeable limestone substrate, cut into a deep canyon with steep cliffs. The lakes end in the impressive waterfalls Sastavci, with the Korana River springing under the base of the falls.

  3. Upon arrival to Plitvice you’ll start a tour of the lakes protected area; well marked wooden paths will take you along picturesque lakes divided in two sections, Upper and Lower lakes. National Park offers visitors seven different routes to tour the lake system, and four hiking trails. During November through March only Lower lakes are accessible to visitors.

About Ljubljana

Ljubljana is Slovenia's small, green capital, a riverside city of bridges, a hilltop castle and cafés, with lakes and mountains within reach.

Ljubljana sits on the Ljubljanica River beneath a castle on a wooded hill, and its compact centre is closed to most traffic. The architect Jože Plečnik shaped much of the look of the city, with the Triple Bridge, the riverside market colonnades and the National and University Library. The Dragon Bridge, guarded by four dragons, recalls the city's symbol, and a funicular climbs to the castle.

Top-ranked sights in Ljubljana: Dragon Bridge, Ljubljana Old Town, Triple Bridge (Tromostovje).
