Plunder from the sack of Southampton was brought back to Monaco, contributing to the principality's prosperity until 1860. n 2002, a new treaty between France and Monaco clarified that if there are no heirs to carry on the dynasty, the Principality will remain an independent nation, rather than be annexed by France. Monaco's military defense, however, is still the responsibility of France.

About Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is an elegant university town in Provence, with plane-shaded boulevards, fountains, markets and the hills Cézanne painted.

Aix-en-Provence was founded by the Romans in 122 BC beside hot springs and later became the capital of Provence. The Cours Mirabeau, a broad avenue shaded by plane trees, divides the old town from the newer quarter, with cafés on one side and old mansions on the other, and fountains run in the small squares behind. Thermal springs still feed its baths.
