The museum houses discoveries from the surrounding area, including the site of the Ancient Olympic Games. The collection includes objects produced and used in the area from prehistory to its time under Roman rule. The principal pieces in the museum are Hermes and the Infant Dionysus (attributed to Praxiteles), some objects from the Temple of Zeus and the Nike of Paionios.

About Katakolo

Katakolo is a small port on the west coast of the Peloponnese and the nearest harbour to ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Games began.

Katakolo sits at the tip of a small cape in the region of Elis, facing the Ionian Sea, with the island of Zakynthos visible on a clear day across the water. The port is a small waterfront of tavernas and cafés along a quay. Pyrgos, the regional town, lies a short way inland, and the coast on either side has long sandy beaches.
