About Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital on the Tuul River, is a high, cold city of Buddhist monasteries, Soviet squares and nomadic traditions.
Ulaanbaatar lies at around 1,350 metres in a valley below Bogd Khan mountain, and is among the coldest capitals in the world. It grew from a movable monastery town, and Gandan Monastery, still a working Buddhist centre, holds a tall gilded statue of Avalokiteshvara. Sükhbaatar Square, the central plaza, is dominated by the Government Palace with a large seated statue of Chinggis Khan.
Top-ranked sights in Ulaanbaatar: Genghis Khan Statue Complex (Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex), Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Zaisan Memorial.
