    15 min

  5. Next, admire the grandeur of La Major Cathedral, one of the most impressive churches of its era in Europe. Completed in the 19th century, its exotic design and commanding position along the waterfront reflect the city’s former wealth and global connections as France’s busiest port.

    20 min

  6. The walk then leads to the Baroque jewel of the Old Charity Center, a place steeped in social history. This elegant structure, now a protected historic monument, offers a glimpse into Marseille’s past, from its original 17th-century role as a shelter for the poor, through its transformation into a hospice in the 18th century, to its use as emergency housing during the upheaval of World War II.

    15 min

  7. The tour concludes in the Panier District, the city’s oldest and most picturesque neighborhood. About Marseille

Marseille, France's oldest city, is a Mediterranean port of old forts, hilltop basilicas and limestone coves, and the home of bouillabaisse.

Greek sailors founded Marseille around 600 BC, making it the oldest city in France. The Vieux-Port is its centre, a long harbour ringed by cafés and the morning fish stalls, guarded by two forts at its mouth. On a hill above, the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde carries a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary and shows the harbour and the islands from its terrace.

Top-ranked sights in Marseille: Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica (La Bonne Mère), Old Port of Marseille (Vieux Port), Vallon des Auffes.
