Fajã do Além is one of São Jorge’s best-preserved and most isolated coastal settlements. With no road access and only this demanding walking trail connecting it to the higher ground, the fajã retains a rare sense of tranquillity and authenticity. This experience combines hiking with the natural and cultural history of São Jorge. Rather than simply following a trail, you will discover how island communities once moved between the highlands and coast, cultivated vineyards and yams, and adapted their buildings and agricultural practices to the steep volcanic landscape. The route also crosses protected natural areas within São Jorge Natural Park and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
