In evidenza
Avignon, the heart of Provence, is to french history what the Vatican city is to Rome. Situated on the bank of the River Rhône, it looks and feels like the backdrop of a medieval fairy tale. It is famously known for the 14th-century seat of the Papacy and its 12th-century-old bridge. Recognized for its ecclesiastical architecture, and historic importance, the centre of Avignon was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city has a lot to offer beyond history. You will be greeted by the picturesque views of the river Rhone, plenty of bars, cafés, and restaurants. About Avignon
Avignon is a walled Rhône city where the popes lived in the fourteenth century, known for its vast palace, a broken bridge and a summer theatre festival.
From 1309 to 1377 the popes governed the Catholic Church from Avignon, and the Palais des Papes, a huge Gothic fortress of pale stone, still rises above the old town. Medieval ramparts more than four kilometres long surround the centre. The Pont Saint-Bénézet, the Pont d'Avignon of the nursery song, stops halfway across the Rhône, with only four of its arches left.
Top-ranked sights in Avignon: Roussillon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Pont du Gard.
