The island is divided into French Saint-Martin in the north and Dutch Sint Maarten in the south, with an open border between them. Philipsburg, the Dutch capital, sits on a narrow strip between Great Bay and a salt pond, its Front Street lined with shops and its boardwalk with cafés.

Maho Beach, beside the airport, is known for the planes that come in low over the sand. On the French side, Grand Case is a seaside village with a street of Creole-style restaurants, and Marigot is a harbour town with a market and a hilltop fort. Pic Paradis is the island's highest point, and boats leave for the small islets and for Anguilla.

Grand Case is known as one of the Caribbean's food streets, with French sauces and Creole spices, and roadside grills called lolos serve ribs and fish. Guavaberry liqueur is the island's own drink. The dry season runs from December to April, and hurricane season falls between June and November.
