Grenada: cosa fare e vedere

Grenada, the Spice Isle, is a green Caribbean island of nutmeg trees, rainforest waterfalls, a pastel harbour town and a long white beach.

Grenada's volcanic interior is covered in rainforest and spice groves, with nutmeg, mace, cinnamon and cocoa grown on estates. St George's, the capital, curls around a horseshoe harbour under Fort George, its streets lined with red-roofed, pastel-coloured houses. On the south-west coast, Grand Anse is the island's long, white beach.

Inland, Grand Etang National Park has a crater lake in the cloud forest, with Annandale Falls and the Seven Sisters waterfalls close by. Underwater, the sculpture park in Molinière Bay has statues standing on the seabed. The town of Gouyave has a nutmeg-processing station, and a distillery at River Antoine still makes rum with a waterwheel. Carriacou and Petite Martinique, small islands to the north, belong to Grenada.

Oil down, a one-pot stew of breadfruit, salted meat, dumplings and callaloo cooked in coconut milk, is the national dish, and Friday-night fish fries in Gouyave draw crowds. Chocolate is made from local cacao. Spicemas, the carnival, takes over the streets in August, and the dry season runs from January to May.
