This ancient fishing village has preserved the ancestral use of the “small horse reed boats” that were used by the Moche and the Chimu civilizations. These fishing boats were so important, they were represented on the ceramic and the walls of Chan Chan.

About Trujillo

Trujillo is a colonial city on Peru's north coast, with colourful mansions, the vast adobe ruins of Chan Chan and the reed-boat beach of Huanchaco.

Trujillo lies on Peru's arid northern coast, founded by the Spanish in 1534, and its centre keeps a grid of colonial streets around the Plaza de Armas. Pastel-painted mansions with wrought-iron balconies and carved window grilles face the plaza, beside the cathedral, and the city is called the City of Eternal Spring for its mild, sunny climate. The marinera, an elegant courtship dance, is celebrated here in a national festival.
