Der Diokletianpalast, um die Wende zum vierten Jahrhundert als Alterssitz des Kaisers erbaut, ist die Altstadt selbst: In seinen Mauern, Kellern und Höfen befinden sich Wohnungen, Läden und Cafés. Der Peristyl, der säulenumstandene Mittelpunkt, führt zur Kathedrale des Heiligen Domnius, einst das Mausoleum des Kaisers, und ihr Glockenturm bietet Ausblicke über die Dächer.
