Höjdpunkter

Richmond's role as the Capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War brought more than just legislators to the city's doorstep. The many battles that occurred across the state and beyond resulted in a vast number of prisoners and wounded soldiers that needed a place to go. Many of these individuals found themselves in Richmond, particularly the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood where this tour takes place. This tour will take you to some of the notable sites in the neighborhood, and will also share with you the stories of some of the people with connections to these buildings.

Rutt

  1. The Farmer's Market is one part of Richmond's oldest neighborhood, Shockoe Bottom, that was home to numerous sites of several Civil War era hospitals and prisons (some still standing, others lost to the past). This tour will share with you how these prisons and hospitals came to be, and what happened to those buildings during and after the war. Also learn about the overwhelming influx of soldiers and prisoners that found their way to Richmond during this tumultuous chapter of American history.

About Richmond

Richmond is the capital of Virginia, a historic city on the James River with a Jefferson-designed Capitol, Civil War history and whitewater in town.

Richmond is the capital of Virginia, set at the falls of the James River where the coastal plain meets the Piedmont. Thomas Jefferson designed the State Capitol, which was modelled on a Roman temple in France and completed in the 1780s. St John's Church on Church Hill is where Patrick Henry made his speech of 1775 demanding liberty or death. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and its museums and battlefields tell that history.

Top-ranked sights in Richmond: Carytown, The Poe Museum, White House of the Confederacy.
