The Big Bus in Budapest runs one main sightseeing loop, the Red Route, with stops at the riverside landmarks of Pest and on the castle hill on the Buda side. This independent guide answers the questions trip planners ask before booking, from stops and timing to tickets, weather and how the bus compares with walking. Use it alongside the ticket page, which sets out what each ticket covers.

Before you ride

The Red Route has eight named stops, and the loop is built around the river. The Basilica stop sits in front of St Stephen's Basilica, with the Hungarian State Opera House about 400 metres away and Andrássy Avenue about 450 metres away. The Parliament stop is directly at the building, and the Chain Bridge stop puts you at the crossing between the two banks. Boarding at the Basilica stop tends to be calmer earlier in the day, which is worth planning around if you are joining with a group.

Choosing a ticket

The products are built differently: some are open-top or double-decker sightseeing loops, while others bundle bus travel with an attraction or a second activity. Those details sit on each ticket page, and that is where the decision should be made.

Questions about Big Bus Budapest

Is the big bus Budapest route worth it?

It is worth it if your plan mixes Pest and the Buda hill in one day, because the Red Route crosses the Chain Bridge and reaches Heroes' Square without a long walk. It is less useful if you only want the Danube bank, since most of the central sights are close enough to reach on foot. Choose it for the spread of stops rather than for a single sight.

How long does a loop take?

Products are built differently, so check the ticket page for the timing of the route you choose.

How many stops are there, and where is the first one?

The Red Route has eight named stops: Basilica (in front of St Stephen's Basilica), Chain Bridge, Heroes' Square, Gellert Square, Funicular, Matthias Church, Margaret Island and Parliament. Stop 1 is first in that list and is the easiest stop to find from the centre. Match stops by name rather than number when you are reading signs.

Does the bus go to Heroes' Square and the castle?

Yes to Heroes' Square, which has its own stop on the route. For Buda Castle, the nearest stop is Funicular, about 150 metres from the castle, so it is a short walk rather than a stop at the gate. Fisherman's Bastion is about 50 metres from the Matthias Church stop, which puts the castle hill sights within easy reach of one stop.

Can children ride the Big Bus?

Age rules are set by each ticket, so confirm them on the ticket page before you book.

Can I get on and off along the way?

The Red Route is a hop-on hop-off route, so you can get off at the named stops, including Margaret Island and Heroes' Square for a break. Hop-on hop-off rules are set by the ticket, so read the ticket page before you plan a long stop.

Is the Big Bus accessible for wheelchair users?

Vehicle access, seating and stop access for wheelchair users are details to confirm on the ticket page before you book. For older travellers, the main appeal is hopping off at a few stops instead of climbing between Pest and the Buda hills.

What is the weather like on an open top ride?

Late spring and early autumn are mild enough for an open top ride, while midsummer can be hot and winter cold and grey. Bring sun cover in summer and a warm layer in winter, since the bridges are exposed to wind.

Is the bus better than a walking tour?

Walking suits the central cluster, since Parliament, Buda Castle, Chain Bridge, Matthias Church, St Stephen's Basilica, Fisherman's Bastion, Andrássy Avenue and the Opera House can be combined in one half-day on foot. The bus earns its place on the longer legs, mainly out to Heroes' Square and the climb between Pest and Buda, where walking takes far more time.

Does the bus reach the Széchenyi Baths or the Central Market Hall?

No stop on the Red Route is within walking distance of the Széchenyi Thermal Baths, but Heroes' Square is close by, and the two can be combined in one half-day on foot. Plan a separate trip for the Central Market Hall, since no stop on this route is close to it.

Is a guided walking tour included with the bus?

Whether a guided walk is bundled with a bus ticket depends on the product, so check the ticket page for what it includes before you buy. Treat any walk as a separate question from the ride itself until you have read the details.

How often do the buses run?

Check the ticket page for how often the buses run. Plan the first leg around the stop you want to reach rather than the bus you want to catch.
