2. Our next stop will be Uspallata. From the southernmost point of the Inca Empire, we head to the towns of Picheuta, Polvaredas, Punta de Vacas and the former Los Penitentes ski complex.

About Mendoza

Mendoza is a wine city of tree-lined avenues and irrigation channels on a dry plain, with the high Andes rising to the west.

Mendoza was largely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1861, which is why its streets are wide and its squares open. Plane trees shade the pavements, watered by old irrigation channels called acequias. Plaza Independencia sits at the centre with four smaller squares around it, and the great Parque General San Martín climbs to the Cerro de la Gloria, a monument with a view over the city.
