Discover the Mont Saint Michel, the jewels of Normandy classified by the UNESCO World Wild Heritage. • In the year of 709 AD and by the request of the Archangel Michel, the bishop Auber (from Avranches) built a small church and settled a communnity of Benedictines on the rock. By the request of the Duke of Normandy and the pre-Romanesque, the church was built before the year one thousand. • Monks and Nuns from "Les Fraternités Monastiques de Jérusalem" have been ensuring a spiritual presence since the year 2001. • Discover the Abbey, the jails and the tight streets. About Bayeux
Bayeux is a small Norman town of medieval lanes and a Gothic cathedral, home to a famous embroidery of the Norman conquest and close to the D-Day beaches.
A strip of embroidered linen almost seventy metres long, made in the eleventh century, tells the story of the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and hangs in its own museum in town. The cathedral, whose crossing spire towers over the rooftops, was consecrated in 1077 with William the Conqueror present. Bayeux escaped bombing in 1944, so its old centre of half-timbered and stone houses along the River Aure is largely intact.
