  1. Step back in time in the beautifully preserved Cromwell Historic Precinct, where heritage buildings meet lakefront charm. Set on the edge of Lake Dunstan, this precinct is home to artisan shops, galleries, cafés, and wine bars nestled among stone buildings from the gold rush era. It’s the perfect place to take a break, enjoy a coffee, and soak in the unique character of old Cromwell.

    30 min

  2. Cycle around the calm waters of the Bannockburn Inlet, where lake views, vineyard rows, and historic gold tailings create a landscape full of texture and character. From here, continue on to Carrick Winery, perched above the water and renowned for its organic wines and seasonal kitchen. Relax with a wine tasting or a long lunch — this is Central Otago at its most indulgent.

  3. As you ride into Clyde, take in views of the impressive Clyde Dam — New Zealand’s third-largest hydroelectric power station. Framed by rugged schist hills and the blue waters of Lake Dunstan, it marks the start (or end) of many Central Otago trail adventures. It’s a striking piece of engineering that contrasts beautifully with the natural landscape.

About Queenstown

Queenstown, on Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand's South Island, is a mountain town beneath the Remarkables, set among gold-rush hills and vineyards.

Queenstown sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, a long, deep lake shaped like a lightning bolt, with the jagged Remarkables mountains rising across the water. It began as a gold-rush camp in the 1860s on the Shotover and Arrow rivers, and the lakefront, with its small streets, preserves a few stone buildings from that time. A gondola climbs Bob's Peak for the view over the lake.

Top-ranked sights in Queenstown: Lake Wakatipu, Kawarau River, Queenstown Gardens.
