About Leh

Leh, the main town of Ladakh high in the Himalaya, is a Buddhist trading centre with a hilltop palace, monasteries and desert mountain scenery.

Leh stands at about 3,500 metres in the Indus Valley, with bare brown mountains around it and snow ranges behind. The nine-storey Leh Palace, built in the 17th century in the style of the Potala in Lhasa, overlooks the old town, and the Namgyal Tsemo monastery crowns the ridge above it.
