• 5Don’t miss this hike even if you’re a bit older!

  We are a couple in our late 60’s, who hike a lot by ourselves, at our own pace. This is our eighth time hiking in Iceland, but we had never been to Þórsmörk, because of the huge impassable rivers. We were very ambivalent about hiking in a group, but wanted very much to see Þórsmörk. We registered for the super-jeep day tour, because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep up with all the young people on the day hike tour, but talking to Harpa on the phone, she said we could decide in the morning of the hike on the spot, after talking to the guide, which tour to take. We were so very fortunate to have Jón Gisli as the guide of the day hike tour that day! He came to talk to us and said ‘no problem, you can do this!’. We were in a group with 5 other youngsters, quite a bit younger than our children. Jón took us on a 13.5 km hike on a spectacular route we never would have gone on ourselves, as not all of the trails were marked. We climbed up two mountains, ending with the spectacular Valahnúkur Mountain. Jón was incredibly good at encouraging me that I could do all this. When I was walking slower than all the youngsters, he just took some breaks for them to take pictures along the way until I caught up. To encourage us on the last steep uphill, he promised hot chocolate and coffee on the peak, and I was convinced he was pulling my leg. But lo and behold, when we reached the summit, he opened for us what I later learned the Midgard people call ‘Jón’s Valahnukúr Cafe’, complete with hot chocolate, coffee, milk, cookies, and chocolate, which he had carried all day on his back (we each brought our packed lunches)! Jón had also promised sunshine towards the end of the hike. Not only was he correct, we had a constant rainbow going up and down that mountain! I learned from him that the rainbow is how Thor gets from one glacier to the next. Jón is an incredibly knowledgeable, humane person, with a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of the place, which has been his playground, as he calls it, ever since he was a little boy hiking all over Þórsmörk with his parents. He knows about the geology, history, folklore, including lots of stories about trolls and elves, and he was an incredible driver on all the very full rivers. But his best aspect in my mind is how he approaches people. He really knows what type of person is in his hike and how to encourage them to get the most out of the day. I highly recommend the small family-run Midgard company, from all respects, and the Hike Day Tour, even if you’re somewhat older... There is also a very nice restaurant at Midgard Base Camp, and a nice pool at Hvolsvöllur to soak in after the hike.

  The meetup was easy. The ride into Thorsmork was thrilling (and beautiful). Our guide (Carlos) was absolutely terrific and his love for Iceland was infectious. The hike was one of the highlights of our week in Iceland, despite rain and aggressive wind.

  AMAZING- what a great tour. I wanted something that felt like we were able to see more of Island and this tour gave me that. First Midgard is great to work with. Everyone is beyond helpful and nice. We did two tours with them and both felt like they were customized just for us. Whatever your preference is they will accommodate. If you are looking for a private tour they will work with you. They absolutely love Iceland and all that it represents and will share that will you. Book with Midgard!

• 5Outstanding Hike in Iceland

  Loved this amazing hike. My husband and I were fortunate to have the hike to ourselves. Chris was a great guide, extremely interesting and knowledgeable about the glaciers. He even pick blueberries for us - delicious. He was very attentive to our abilities and needs, tailoring the hike where necessary. The lunch we purchased from Midgard was delicious and plentiful - we had some of it for an after hike snack. Brownies were fabulous. From booking to check-in to the hike itself, everything was seamless, well organized and the people were all very friendly and helpful. I would absolutely recommend Midgard Adventure to lead a tour. I would even consider staying at their property in the future.

• 5What a gorgeous day at Thorsmork!

  Thorsmork day was a special experience! Weather was perfect! Our guide, Marjolijn was the ABSOLUTE BEST! This lady really knows what she is doing! She made sure we got to see the most beautiful views of this gorgeous area while also making sure we were safe. She was as informative (if not more so) as any guide I’ve used for other adventure tours and her sense of humor is second to none. She is a tremendous leader and a caring human. Her love for Iceland is apparent and her desire to share it with the world makes her a true asset to the Midgard family.

• 5Rewarding hike

  I went with my friends on this hike. The ride on the super jeep was fun; we crossed several rivers knowing that we were perfectly safe as opposed to some other vehicles we saw along the way. The hike was 11 kilometers and quite challenging, but the scenery was epic and worth it. We saw gorgeous snow capped mountain and blankets of wild flowers. Our guide Lelea (sorry I am not sure the spelling of her name) was capable and knowledgeable about the history and geology of the area. She also spoke Chinese, English, and French to people in our hike group. I bet she can speak several other languages too!

Vík í Mýrdal is the southernmost village on the Icelandic mainland, set on a green slope above a long beach, with a small red-roofed church on the hill.
